wormboys gigs: Greenbelt Festival + fundraiser in Leeds

We have a couple of very exciting events coming up for wormboys in a couple of weeks!

First, on Wednesday 20th August we will be playing a fundraiser gig at Hyde Park Book Club in Leeds. Themed around the film I Saw The TV Glow (which promises to be…weird) the event has been organised in support of The Hangout, a super awesome LGBTQIA youth project. We’ll be sharing a stage with oli reeves and Leeds Queers Against Fascism.

Secondly, for the weekend of 22-24 August we will be whizzing down to the countryside near Kettering for Greenbelt Festival! This will be my second time performing at Greenbelt, as I gave a talk about trans feminism in 2023. The whole event had thoroughly excellent vibes, especially the Rebel Rouser stage in the woods. I’m excited to be returning there with wormboys this time around for a full set of live music – including lots of material written for our forthcoming debut album. I can’t wait for us to share it!

Building our own power: the Glasgow Transfem Electrolysis Project

Last year I joined the Glasgow Transfem Electrolysis Project, a super cool initiative which is raising money to train and equip two community members as electrolysists. Building on the example of Electrolysis by Siobhan, who opened her service off the back of a similar project in Manchester, the project’s aim is to ensure affordable and safe hair removal for trans women and non-binary people.

In an era of continued NHS failings and civil rights rollbacks, it’s important to be reminded of the power that lies in coming together as a community and working towards a common goal in our collective interest. Hateful policymakers and journalists can never take that away from us.

You can donate to the fundraiser here. We are also running LOVE ELECTRIC, a gig at Mono in Glasgow on Thursday 13th February, with pop, folk, punk, and drag artists. If you’re local, please come by to learn more about the project, and see some incredible live performers! I’m really excited for what’s going to be an amazing night.

Gig tickets are available here.

Interview on Acadames podcast

webfront8Earlier this year I took part in an interview for Acadames, a super-cool podcast “that explores whether being a woman in academia is a dream, game, or scam”. The episode is now available! I really enjoyed speaking with Whitney  Robinson about my work, and hope you will enjoy our conversation just as much.

Today Whitney speaks with Dr. Ruth Pearce, a social researcher and feminist scholar based at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom. Ruth discusses her current work with the Trans Pregnancy project, why gender equity schemes are so important in academia, and offers tips for resiliency when facing online harassment and political backlash. Along the way, she shares stories of her life as a trans woman, how academic institutions in the UK differ from those in the US, and the similarities between organizing a concert and organizing a conference.
